Traditional religious teaching has blinded us to the fact that flesh and spirit are two poles that belong together. Romantic love is undeniably sexual; yet it contains the potential for great spiritual experience. You cannot say that desire is sinful while at the same time holding out sexual fulfillment as a prize. Why would love ever accept a sin as its prize? Sex allows you to blend the needs of the self with the freedom of the Self. In many ways sexual freedom is frightening because of the loss of boundaries. the spiritual dimension of sex is its joyfulness and ecstasy, its communication of love between two people. Society, anxious to make us conform, tells us that if we don't resist our sexual urges, we will go out of control. I am a doctoral candidate at the Institute for
Advanced Studies of Human Sexuality, San Francisco, CA. I have earned
a certificate in Clinical Sexology and an Associate Certificate in
Sex Education. In addition, I graduated from Villanova University
with a degree in Human Services and am presently working as a Sexuality
Coach. I am member of The American College of Sexologists.
